Nice, sturdy furniture for indoor or outdoor use2009-11-134 / 5
I bought 2 corner pieces and put them facing each other, creating a loveseat. I needed something modular for my office, which is a pretty small room, and this works perfectly. I have an antique oak drawing table in there as well as very old oak floors, and to my delight this "kapur" wood went really well with those finishes. It is a dull finish, which I think is why it works. The cushions are really firm, probably good for sitting outdoors but kind of rigid for an indoor room. The covers are a muslin--type fabric that is sort of a yellowish-white. It probably looks nice and crisp outdoors, but indoors it's a little too yellow, so I am going to try Rit as one of the reviewers mentioned. The assembly is not bad--but there is one important trick to it (the corner seat piece only). You have to be sure to slip 2 of the cams into the holes on the front right edge (according to the pic here)--you slip them in but don't fasten them with a screw until the side piece has been installed. The instructions do not mention this at all, and then you end up with a loose side piece and 2 extra cams! So make sure you slip them in before putting on the side piece, and I even held the cams in position temporarily with two screws until right before taking them straight out carefully and sliding the side piece on.

After owning this set for 6 months, I would have to say they are not the same quality as higher-end teak furniture.

** The wood needed to be sealed as soon as it arrived.
** Assembly should have been easy if the holes were better aligned.
** It is a heavy, Sturdy product.
** the fabric is AWEFUL for outdoors. Don't buy it and expect NOT to get it recovered. We don't even use it because we wanted to keep it looking nice for special occasions, but it STILL look horrible just from the elements. This set sits next to a table chair set that is 5 years old and the fabric on it looks brand new. The Balboa set is moldy, mildewy and stained.
** The cushions are hard as a rock! Seriously!
**So they look great for a few weeks, that's it! Now I need ot get them recovered and re-sealed.
Great product but may be difficult to maintain2009-09-223 / 5
I purchased several pieces from the Starthwood Balboa series about a year and a half ago. I made the mistake of not protecting from the weather when I first got it. After the first summer, it was covered in mold. I tried to get it steam cleaned. This did not work. The only way to clean mold is by using bleach (good thing the product is white!). So I had to remove the covers on all my cushions - which was quite difficult. Then I placed the covers in a top loader washing machine in cold water and lots of bleach. I let it soak overnight and then I did a few rinses to get as much of the chlorine smell out. I had to do several batches since I had so many covers. I dryed it on a low heat setting since I didn't want them to shrink. This got out most of the stains. Do not wash in hot water, this seems to set the stains instead of take them out. Once the covers were all clean and dry, I put them back on the cushions - a real pain in the neck! When removing and putting the covers on the cushions, a good technique is to fold the cushion in half and then shimmy the covers on or off. After all the covers were back on the cushions, I sprayed them with a mold inhibitor (I used 303 High Tech Fabric Guard - you can order it online). Our patio furniture is in a gazebo so I put up curtains to keep out most of the rain and wind. This helped to keep the furniture nice and clean. This year I won't have to go through the bleaching ordeal.
"some " assembly required!2009-08-023 / 5
These items are VERY tricky to assemble. The instructions are cryptic and not helpful.Be ready for a frustrating experience!
Solid Furniture for the Price, but Oh! My aching fingers!2009-07-154 / 5
We had been searching for some time for a solid and comfortable (and affordable) set of outdoor furniture for our screened-in porch. The Strathwood Balboa sectional fit our space exactly, and therefore seemed like a natural choice. We ordered 3 armless chairs, a corner chair and an ottoman last week; the armless chairs arrived within a day of placing the order (wow!), the corner piece arrived the following day, and the ottoman arrived a couple of days after that...all within a week of the order.

Here's our take on the furniture:

Pros

Attractive
Comfortable
Seems solid once correctly put together (see note on corner chair...make sure you use all the bolts included in package)

Cons

--Some lack of consistency in manufacturing...two armless chairs went together easily, one required us to "chip out" wood from some holes (used a drill and bit) in order to allow the back slats to fit in. I also found that the screws for the ottoman, clearly the "easiest" piece to put together, were unbelievably tight and hard to screw in...I eventually used some candle wax (rubbed the screw threads across the stub of a candle) to lubricate the screws and they were easier to get in. Also, in assembling the ottoman, I stripped two screws trying to use my drill (because of the tightness of the screws) in place of the allen wrench provided...fortunately, there was an extra screw included in that package...all the other pieces came with the exact number of necessary screws and bolts.
--"Instructions" are inadequate for the corner piece; even with the caution given by other reviewers, I missed the bolts that others warned about, and yes, I, too, had to take everything apart and then re-assemble it. Frustrating and time-consuming!

The Natural-colored cushions are attractive, but, like others, I fear trying to keep them clean. I sprayed them all with a couple of cans of Scotchgard, and intend to spot clean them as necessary and re-apply the Scotchgard annually. ALSO--the cushions are VERY FIRM...there is not much "give" when you sit down, but we are okay with that. They are noticably firm when you sit, so keep that in mind.

All in all, we are delighted with the purchase, and feel that the quality is very good. Assembly was frustrating at times, but with that behind us, we are enjoying our new furniture.
