| | I love using this product on my trees. I tried it first on a struggling redwood. It worked well, so I ordered more for my fruit trees. A great way to keep the trees happy during the long hot summer. |

| | Bought the Ooze tube to water some young red maples in my yard. They were easy to set up and start using. Effective product. Plan to buy a few more for other trees we're planing. |
| not the best | 2010-07-26 | 2 / 5 |
| Awkward to put together and not movable from tree to tree like the TreeGator I also ordered. Worked like it said it would just not the best design.
Would not order this one again. |
| Not thrilled with these | 2010-07-23 | 2 / 5 |
| I live in Nashville, TN, which is currently experiencing a 100+ degree Fahrenheit heat wave. Consequently I'm needing to water my flowers and trees a lot more often, and was looking for a solution that's a bit more elegant than buying a 10-gallon bucket, poking a hole in the bottom and setting it near the tree trunk.
Unfortunately I really don't think that's what I got with the Ooze Tubes. I ordered five of them and really wish I'd saved my money.
1.) These are not very sturdy. The plastic quality is similar to a 3mm contractor bag, and it seems to me like they'd tear very easily. I can't see how you'd get more than one season of use from them, anyway.
2.) To install the drip spigot, you literally take the supplied 10-penny nail, poke a hole in the thin plastic, then insert. There's not much mechanism to keep the spigot in the hole - small plastic flanges - and mine flipped and flopped all over the place before I finally got it to stay in.
3.) I can't imagine how you'd arrange these so they'd actually work. I have a relatively flat yard, and I can't seem to get the tube to lie down in such a way that the spigot is on the bottom - and I can't arrange them without pulling the spigot out of the nail-drilled hole.
The instructions call for these to be attached to a stake, which you then drive into the ground near the tree. This means your ability to move the tube without having to re-drive the stake is nearly zero, and that's not great news considering your tube will stop dripping unless the ground near your tree is absolutely level. The directions do say to insert the spigot at the lowest point of the tube, but when I did that it was nearly 12" away from the tree, so it's hard to see how you'd do this without putting the tube right on top of the tree trunk (which could cause mold and fungus.) Again, the issue is arranging these things - every time I touch mine the spigot falls out. Which is hardly what I'd envisioned in terms of a slow, steady delivery of water to the tree roots.
I'd return these if I could. That said, they did ship in a reasonable amount of time and I didn't have issues with the seller, so I'm not going to give them only one star (which I would if I were ranking the product only.) |
| Ooze Tubes Saved Our New Trees | 2010-06-24 | 4 / 5 |
| | This product is a great idea! We planted both evergreen and fruit trees on a berm behind our house. Unfortunately, the water catch basins I dug quickly deteriorated due to the steepness of the slope. When we watered, the water would run right past the trees down the slope. During the winter months, the evergreens started turning brown and I thought they would die. I bought an ooze tube for each tree and staked them in on the slope above the trees (not around the trunk like the picture--which works great if you have flat ground). I would only fill them on warm days once every 1-2 weeks in the winter to reduce the chance of freezing. I also added an additional hole when needed so the bag would empty in 1-2 days instead of the 1-2 weeks they were designed for. I used a safety pin because the nail provided should only be used if you will fill the hole with the emitter provided. I am happy to say that because the ooze tubes slowly released the water, the water went down into the ground and the trees recovered in about 3 weeks. By spring, they were all happy campers and put out several inches of new growth. I am keeping the ooze tubes on year round now because there is less water wasted and they work great! I have put some smooth round river rocks inside the bags to keep the wind from blowing them around between fillings. The only negative issues I have are: the emitters sometimes pop out, and the price seems quite high for what seems like an inexpensive product to make. However, having said that, the product did work very well and I am sure our new trees would not have survived without them! |
