I purchased the OEM version of this mower at Home Depot then took it back when I found this model on , which is all cast iron and American Made. This mower does what it is advertised to do and the cast iron model adds a bit more weight over the more plastic models adding to the quality of operation.
This mower takes no more effort than a similar gasoline rotary type mower. I have a 1 acre lot, but use this mower for trimming the small areas and getting a bit more exercise for the effort. The rest of the yard I use the riding mower. This mower does a superlative job on Bermuda grass, and about the same on weeds as the riding mower.
I'm very pleased with this product and appreciate machines that stand the test of time. What is does, it does well and does not use gas. |

After spending a month or more reading up on the different reel lawn mowers available, I decided on the 16 inch American Lawn Mower, mainly because of its sturdy construction, good reviews and the preference to buy something made in America. I have not been let down, my husband thought I (being 51) was a tad too ambitious wanting a manual mower, he helped me put it together (which was quite easy) but figured I'd call a lawn care service after the first use.
I love this mower! The reviewers who mentioned you get a good work out using it were correct, but it's fun and fulfilling to get some exercise and accomplish something at the same time, not to mention having no worries about gasoline, spark plugs, breaking your arm starting a power mower, no smelly fumes, just a nice looking lawn that you can mow at any hour of the day. I do have to get up a little earlier on weekends now, otherwise my husband has already gotten the lawn mowed and all I have to look forward to is coffee while appreciating how pretty the yard looks.

PROS:
-Inexpensive and faster than dragging out the gas lawnmower.
-Although it weighs every bit of 32 pounds, it's still half the weight of a gas mower and much easier to push and maneuver.
-This heft translates to better traction to power the gearing which makes it easier to cut through the grass, even when it gets thick.
-Quiet and built like a tank.
-The shearing action of the reel-type mowers keeps clippings green instead of an ugly brown so it makes your lawn appear fuller and healthier.
CONS:
-Any twig sticking up higher than the cutting bar will stop you instantly. It's best to canvass your lawn beforehand.
-Depending on how fast your grass grows, you may have to mow twice a week, any grass taller than the front bar (the one with the sticker) will be pushed over instead of cut.
-The handle angle is way too shallow.
TIP:
-Give a quick spray with WD40 when you finish to keep the cutting surfaces rust free between cuts.
When I'm out cutting the yard I get nods of approval from the green freaks in my neighborhood. The truth is, I could care less about global warming. This is simply about cutting the lawn the proper way. |

I owned an electric lawn mower before with bermuda grass. This lawnmower is by far superior:
Pros:
- no wires to tug along
- perfect cut every time on well kept lawns, does not miss any blade of bermuda! By far superior to my former electric lawn mower. The grass also looks greener now, no brown tips or brown spots.
- very solid all metal construction, made in the USA
- Same or easier to push as pushing a electric or gas lawnmower
- blades and cutter are safe to use around children (my son can play around while I mow)
- my wife wants to cut the grass now!
- no gas smell
- easy to store and clean
- no need for a mulching bag, self fertilizes the lawn
Cons (all are very minor and easily solvable):
- blade will stop on the smallest twig (if it is caught in the blades)
- some long weeds will not always get cut
If you have a well maintained lawn (does not need to be perfect, mine is not) this is what you need! |

Great product. I really wanted to locate a vintage reel mower because so many of the old ones worked really well and were built to last. I had purchased a reel mower from Lowe's a few years ago that was lousy and bummed me out.
I'm so glad I decided to give this mower a try. It works really well, is sturdy and is simple enough to assemble that my 15 yr. old daughter had no trouble doing so although she's never assemble anything like this before! |
