Midland is a world leader in wireless two-way and weather/hazard alert radios, with an extensive line of land mobile radios, CB, GMRS and FRS radios, MURS radios, weather-monitor alert radios, itinerant radios and a line of quality antennas and accessories.

Stay up to date on all the latest weather, hazard, and civil emergency information with the Midland WR-100B monitor. Capable of receiving seven National Oceanic & Atmospheric Association (NOAA) channels--each of which receives emergency advisories on tornadoes, floods, severe thunderstorms, civil danger warnings, and more--the WR-100B is a must for people who live in high-risk weather areas, such as the Southeast or Midwest. Plus, the seven NOAA channels offer coverage for roughly 93 percent of the U.S., so most people are well covered regardless of where they live.

Another valuable function is the monitor's Specific Area Message Encoding (SAME) reception. SAME allows users to program the radio to sound an alert only when weather and other emergencies threaten a selected county or counties. The technology eliminates all alerts from other areas, so users won't have to perk up their ears each time the alert sounds only to find the emergency is actually 100 miles up the highway. In addition, the WR-100B's memory system accepts up to 25 counties, so you can monitor a broad swatch of counties at once or restrict it to one.

Should an alert occur, users have a choice of three warning systems: a 90 dB siren, a voice alert, or a flashing red LED light. The siren is the best option for people with larger homes or who aren't always near the monitor, while the latter two options work well for smaller homes. Additional features include a clock with an alarm and a snooze button, an emergency power backup that keeps your radio working during power outages or outdoor use, and external antenna and alert jacks.

The WR-100B, which works with three AA batteries (not included), measures 5.12 by 2 by 6.25 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty.

You Get What You Pay For2010-03-093 / 5
I thought I'd save a little money and buy the cheaper model with fewer features and I IMMEDIATELY regretted it. Yes, I was able to set it for the specific county I was in but not which types of alerts it alarmed for. I was frequently awoken by the cascade of frivolous alerts, "you are in a thunderstorm watch, thunderstorm warning, flash flood watch, flash flood warning". Spring is a stormy time of year and I was repeatedly punished for being frugal. It was just a matter of time before I kicked that radio into submission. It alarms no more. Back to the drawing board.

Good Purchase2009-11-304 / 5
I have had this product for two weeks now. It seems to be working. There has been no violent weather yet, so I don't know for sure it works. The weekly test transmissions have been received, and I like the fact that the alarm did not go off. The only thing I would change on this radio is the light controls on the display. There are only two settings - on and off. I wish there was a way to set the intensity. The thing lights up the whole bedroom at night. I like the idea of having a clock you can see in the dark, but does it have to be so bright you can see it through your closed eyelids?
Works well, but an upgrade is well worth it2009-10-213 / 5
This particular unit does what it claims to do, and I guess that's the main thing. However, I don't think most people want to be awakened in the middle of the night for a garden variety thunderstorm watch or flash flood watch when they live on high ground. This radio dutifully receives and "calls out" all the weather events in your area. The problem is, that always means a loud, piercing alarm for all types of hazards, no matter how minor or inapplicable they are likely to be in your specific location.

I had this model and exchanged it for a WR300. The WR300 is programmable and configurable so that you can turn off the audible alarms for many weather events. The main reason we wanted a weather radio is for tornado warnings; most of the other events we get in this area aren't something we want to be awakened for. This model, the WR100B, is not programmable like that and alarms on everything it receives. But with the WR300 we were able to turn off the audible alarm for most hazards and only keep a few of the major ones. (At first I was puzzled at the lack of a setting for the tornado warning on the WR300, but realized later that the alarm for that one can never be turned off. And really -- who would want a radio like this and disable the alarm for a tornado warning in your area?)

Anyway, back to the WR100B here. Yes, it works, it picks up the events and warns just fine, and the reception of the weather radio is good -- but I can guarantee that if you buy this model, the first time you are awakened at 3 AM for a relatively minor weather hazard, you'll wish you spent the extra $15 and bought the WR300 instead.
